School Personnel Training

Program Description:

The Managing Students with Seizures School Nurses Training Program is a continuing education training program designed to provide the school nurse with information, strategies and resources that will enable him/her to better manage the student with seizures by:

-- Supporting positive treatment outcomes

-- Maximizing educational and developmental opportunities

-- Ensuring a safe and supportive environment

Program Description:

The Seizure Training for School Personnel curriculum was developed by the Epilepsy Foundation in response to the need for a standardized educational tool.

The encouraging manner of teachers and other school personnel are key factors in promoting positive social and educational outcomes for the student with seizures and epilepsy. Appropriate training optimizes seizure management strategies and helps to insure the full integration of the child with seizures into all school activities, while minimizing further stigmatization.

A seizure is often over by the time the school nurse arrives. Therefore, it is important that all of those who may be in a position to assist the student with epilepsy receive information about seizure recognition, seizure first aid, and the impact of seizures and epilepsy on learning and psychosocial development.

Audiences for this training module include teachers, school nurses, educators in special education, school librarians, teacher assistants, school bus drivers, school aides and other staff members or volunteers in kindergarten through grade 12 settings.
